My Fiancé Forgot to Turn Off the Baby Monitor Before Leaving — I Heard a Woman Laughing in Our Bedroom Last weekend, I took our six-month-old son to my parents' house so they could spend time with him. My fiancé stayed home because he said he had too much work to catch up on. Before leaving for the office that morning, he must have forgotten to disconnect the baby monitor app from his phone. I was making lunch when my phone suddenly started playing audio from the nursery camera in our house. At first, I thought the app had glitched, but then I heard a woman laughing. I turned the volume all the way up, and a second later I heard my fiancé say, 'Come on, she's over two hours away. Stop worrying.' I called him immediately, but he declined the call. I tried again, and this time it went straight to voicemail. Then the woman asked, 'Are you sure she won't come back?' My fiancé chuckled and replied, 'Trust me. We have plenty of time.' I grabbed my son, threw the diaper bag into the car, and drove home without stopping once. The entire drive I kept trying to convince myself there had to be another explanation. By the time I pulled into the driveway, my hands were shaking so badly I could barely get the key into the front door. The house was completely silent when I walked in, but I could hear muffled voices upstairs. I climbed the stairs as quietly as I could, reached our bedroom, and slowly pushed the door open. My fiancé was sitting on our bed beside a woman I'd never seen before. She looked at me, smiled like I was interrupting something completely normal, and asked him, 'Oh... is this your wife?' He looked at the floor for a second before quietly answering, 'Yeah...' She smirked and said, 'Then do what you promised you'd do if she ever caught us.' My fiancé slowly stood up from the bed and started walking toward me.⬇️

My Fiancé Forgot to Turn Off the Baby Monitor—Then the Woman in Our Bedroom Told Me the One Thing He Never Wanted Me to Hear

He glanced at the woman.

Then at me.

“Her name is Rebecca.”

“That doesn’t answer my question.”

Rebecca folded her arms.

“Why don’t you tell her the truth?”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“Rebecca, this isn’t how we agreed to do this.”

My heart skipped.

“Agreed to do what?”

Daniel looked at me.

I could see that he was trying to find the right words.

That frightened me more than anything.

Because Daniel had always been quick with words.

He could talk his way out of almost anything.

But now he seemed completely lost.

I pointed toward the woman.

“She was in our house while I was gone.”

Daniel nodded slowly.

“Yes.”

“And you knew she was coming.”

Another pause.

“Yes.”

“And you told her that you had plenty of time because I was hours away.”

His face changed.

“Yes.”

I felt my chest tighten.

“Then explain it.”

Rebecca suddenly stood.

“He’s not going to.”

Daniel turned toward her.

“Stop.”

“No,” she said. “I’m done waiting.”

I stared at both of them.

“Waiting for what?”

Rebecca looked directly at me.

“To tell you the truth.”

I almost laughed.

The entire situation was so strange that my mind couldn’t process it.

I had expected to discover an affair.

I had expected lies.

I had expected some humiliating explanation involving another woman.

But this felt different.

There was something else happening.

Something I didn’t understand.

I glanced toward the hallway.

My six-month-old son was downstairs.

The thought of him suddenly made everything clearer.

Whatever was happening, I wasn’t going to stand there arguing with two people who clearly knew more than I did.

“I’m leaving,” I said.

Daniel immediately stepped forward.

“Wait.”

“No.”

“Please.”

I shook my head.

“You lied to me.”

“I know.”

“You brought a stranger into our home.”

“I know.”

“You ignored my calls.”

“I know.”

“And now you’re telling me to wait?”

Daniel looked devastated.

But I couldn’t tell whether he was genuinely upset or simply afraid of losing control of the situation.

Rebecca reached into her handbag.

Daniel’s face went pale.

“Rebecca,” he said quietly.

She ignored him.

She pulled out a small envelope.

Then she walked toward me.

I didn’t move.

“What is that?”

“Something you should have received a long time ago.”

She held it out.

I stared at the envelope.

My name was written across the front.

And I recognized the handwriting immediately.

My hands went cold.

“Where did you get this?”

Rebecca looked at Daniel.

“He gave it to me.”

I turned toward him.

“You gave her this?”

Daniel didn’t answer.

I looked back at the envelope.

There was something deeply familiar about the handwriting.

Something that made my stomach twist.

I took it.

The moment I opened it, I saw a photograph.

My breath caught.

It was a picture of Daniel.

But he wasn’t alone.

Standing beside him was a woman I recognized.

My mother.

I stared at the photograph.

I couldn’t understand what I was seeing.

My mother had passed away years earlier.

Daniel had never met her.

At least, that’s what he had always told me.

I looked up slowly.

“Where did you get this?”

Rebecca’s expression softened.

“Your mother gave it to me.”

I felt the room spin.

“That’s impossible.”

“No,” Rebecca said. “It isn’t.”

Daniel finally spoke.

“Rebecca, please.”

I turned toward him.

“You knew my mother?”

He looked down.

“Yes.”

The word seemed to echo through the room.

I stared at him.

“How?”

Daniel sat down.

His shoulders dropped.

For the first time since I’d known him, he looked completely defeated.

“I met her before I met you.”

My mind raced.

“When?”

“Years ago.”

“How many years?”

He hesitated.

“Almost ten.”

I shook my head.

“That’s impossible.”

“You were still living in another state.”

I looked at Rebecca.

She nodded.

“Daniel knew your mother for years before you ever met him.”

I couldn’t breathe.

“Why?”

Nobody answered.

I looked at the photograph again.

My mother was smiling.

Daniel stood beside her.

And behind them was a building I recognized.

The hospital where my mother had spent the final months of her life.

I suddenly remembered something.

A detail I’d forgotten.

A man who had visited her.

A man she’d refused to identify.

At the time, I’d assumed it was a friend.

Now I wondered if it had been Daniel.

I looked at him.

“Why did you know my mother?”

Daniel rubbed his face.

“Because she asked me to help her.”

“With what?”

Rebecca stepped forward.

“With you.”

I froze.

“Me?”

She nodded.

“Your mother was worried about you.”

I almost laughed.

“My mother died before Daniel and I even met.”

“Exactly.”

The room went silent.

I looked between them.

“What does that have to do with today?”

Rebecca’s voice softened.

“Everything.”

She explained that years before my mother died, she had discovered something about Daniel’s family.

Something that could have affected my future.

Something she believed I had the right to know.

But before she could tell me, she became seriously ill.

She asked Daniel to keep the information safe until the right time.

“Why didn’t he tell me?”

Rebecca looked at Daniel.

“Because your mother asked him not to.”

I stared at him.

“She asked you to keep a secret from me?”

“Yes.”

“For how long?”

Daniel swallowed.

“Until you were ready.”

I shook my head.

“Ready for what?”

That’s when Rebecca handed me another photograph.

This one was different.

It showed a small house.

I recognized it immediately.

It was the house my mother had owned before she died.

The house had been sold shortly after her death.

Or so I’d always believed.

But in the corner of the photograph was a date.

And beneath it was a handwritten note.

I read the words.

Then I looked at Daniel.

“What’s this?”

He didn’t answer.

I read it again.

The note said:

“If she ever finds out, take her to the house.”

My heart began pounding.

“What house?”

Daniel finally looked at me.

“Your mother’s house.”

“That house was sold.”

“No.”

I stared at him.

Daniel lowered his eyes.

“It was never sold.”

I couldn’t speak.

“Then what happened to it?”

Daniel took a deep breath.

“Your mother put it in a trust.”

I looked at Rebecca.

She nodded.

“She left instructions.”

“For me?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Rebecca’s eyes filled with tears.

“Because she knew there were things about your family that you had never been told.”

I felt completely overwhelmed.

I thought about the baby monitor.

The woman laughing.

Daniel saying I was hours away.

The strange conversation.

I had assumed I’d caught my fiancé cheating.

Instead, I had walked into a secret that had apparently been waiting for me for years.

But there was still one question.

The question I couldn’t stop thinking about.

“If all of this is true,” I said, “why did you tell her we had plenty of time?”

Daniel looked at me.

His expression changed.

“I wasn’t talking about you.”

I stared at him.

“Then who were you talking about?”

Rebecca slowly reached into her bag again.

This time, she pulled out a set of keys.

She placed them on the bed.

Daniel looked at them.

I looked at him.

“What are those?”

Rebecca answered.

“The keys to your mother’s house.”

My heart stopped.

“Why do you have them?”

Rebecca looked toward the bedroom window.

“Because someone has been going there.”

I felt a chill run through me.

“Who?”

She looked at Daniel.

Then back at me.

“That’s what we were trying to find out.”

Suddenly, everything made sense.

Daniel hadn’t been hiding another woman.

He had been hiding an investigation.

The woman I’d heard laughing wasn’t his secret girlfriend.

She was someone who had been helping him uncover the truth about my family.

But there was still something that didn’t make sense.

Why had Daniel told her I was more than two hours away?

Why had he been so worried about me coming home?

And why had he promised Rebecca that he would do something if I ever discovered them?

I looked at him.

“Daniel.”

He didn’t answer.

“Tell me the truth.”

He finally raised his eyes.

“I promised Rebecca that if you ever found out about the house, I would take you there.”

“Why?”

He glanced at the keys.

“Because that’s where your mother left the answers.”

I stepped closer.

“What answers?”

Daniel looked at me.

“The reason she never told you who your father really was.”

The room went silent.

I couldn’t move.

My mother had been gone for years.

I’d spent most of my life believing I knew everything about my family.

But suddenly, I realized that I might have been wrong.

Daniel picked up the keys.

“There’s something you need to see.”

I looked toward the nursery.

My son was still downstairs.

My entire life seemed to be changing around me.

And I had no idea what I was about to discover.

But one thing was certain.

The woman in my bedroom had never been the real mystery.

The real mystery was my mother.

And the secret she had taken to her grave.

A secret that Daniel had been protecting for years.

And now, finally, I was about to find out why.
